Reception

Reception

In Reception we strive to create a calm, nurturing and stimulating environment. As a team we facilitate the children with experiences which will support the development of their knowledge, independence and confidence. The newest member of our team is Simba, our class pet hamster who teaches the children to be gentle, stimulates their curiosity and gives the children a sense of responsibility within the environment. We encourage children to have the confidence to persevere and take risks in their learning to ensure they always have the positive attitude to ‘have a go’.

By the end of the year we aim for all children to achieve a good level of development in the 17 key areas and be Year One ready; this now includes a strong focus on cursive writing. We also ensure that all groups of children are catered for through differentiation and challenge.   We implement this through planning a child centred curriculum that builds on children’s experiences, knowledge and interests. We accomplish this by interweaving children’s ideas and adult led stimuli. We have an exploratory environment where children can free-flow between the indoor and outdoor classroom.

At Lady Katherine, the Reception team know and understand that children learn rapidly when feeling holistically happy and when provided with rich opportunities, where they explore, investigate and discover. We encourage collaboration between staff and parents so we endorse an open door policy. Please feel free to ask us any questions.

Reception Curriculum

Autumn Term: To ensure there is a smooth transition from Nursery, we allow children to adapt to their new routines and surroundings by having a staggered entry. They will be slowly introduced to a full day and lunch times which they may not have encountered before. They will then feel more settled from receiving a slow transition. They will receive continued support from staff and also by having the opportunity to link home/school comforts with our class pet hamster. The main topics of this term will be based around ‘All About Me’, collaborating this with their experiences of ‘Autumn Changes, Bonfire Night and Christmas.

Spring Term: After the Christmas break, the children will then experience a change to the classroom. They will be transported to Space! During this topic the children will lead their learning through their curiosity and use their imagination to play within an environment which has a high level of sensory activities and new learning. During the run up to Easter the children will explore the topic of ‘Dinosaur Dig’ and learn about the past and explore the huge mammals which use to walk the earth.

Summer Term: During this term the children are given opportunities to explore different fairy tales and absorb themselves into a land of make believe! With castles, kings, princesses, knights and mystical creatures, they truly become aware of using their senses when describing and using their imagination ready for Year One.
