Year 1

Year One

Year One marks the transition from play based learning in Reception to a more formal learning environment. We endeavour to provide hands on, practical experiences to both support and challenge the children. Children are actively involved in a range of memorable learning experiences which promote creativity, independence and enjoyment. Children should become confident in developing their written ideas, with a focus on writing sentences with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

In Year One we work especially hard on developing the children’s phonological knowledge in preparation for the phonics screening check. The phonics screening check is a short assessment of phonic decoding that is designed to confirm whether children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify those who need extra help to improve their decoding skills. The check consists of 20 real words and 20 pseudo-words that a child reads aloud to the teacher. School will report the children’s score on their end of year school report.

We provide a variety of educational visits during the school year which include a trip to Twycross Zoo and Coventry Transport Museum to further enrich the children’s curriculum.

In the first half of the Spring term we use the theme of Superheroes and read the fantastic story ‘Supertato’ to inspire their creative writing and link this to Design and Technology when we make vegetable soup.  In the second half of the Spring term, we learn all about amazing animals and research and create fact files on our favourite ones. We also visit Twycross zoo to learn all about animals and their habitats.
