Year 2

Year Two

Year 2 is all about learning, fun, friendliness and getting ready for the juniors. We are known as the Barn Owl Class – and we say that is because we are very wise and sensible. We hope that children enjoy their time in Year 2, building on the skills and knowledge they have learned in Year 1. The children will have the opportunity to learn in a range of different environments, whilst striving for personal excellence. We aim to ensure that every child is successful in achieving to the highest attainment and makes good or better progress throughout the year.

Within Year 2, children will have a range of opportunities to explore and extend their learning in all areas of the curriculum. Continuing on from their learning skills they have acquired in Year 1, each lesson will challenge and ignite their thirst for learning.

There are exciting topics in Year 2 – Explorers, Kings and Queens and the Great Fire of London, to scaffold our learning journey. This year there will be a range of educational trips and visitors to enhance the children’s learning and bring it to life.

Now that the children are in Year 2, we encourage and support them in becoming responsible and independent learners.  Our expectations are that the children take pride in their work and are proud of their achievements in all areas of school life. We look forward to sharing the successes of the year group and individual children with you.

A successful home-school partnership through regular communication is essential for the children to have a happy and smooth time in Year 2, and to make sure children achieve well in their end of Key Stage 1 tests and assessments.  We value the hard work you do at home to support your child and look forward to sharing that with you.

Year Two Curriculum

Autumn Term: Our topic is Famous Explorers. Through this topic we develop our History and Geography skills, as well as some of the English, art and design technology work.  We think about Polar regions, and the Race the Pole explorers. We study continents and oceans – and learn about Christopher Columbus sailing across to America, and then we move onto space travel to learn about Neil Armstrong.

Spring Term: We use the topic of Kings and Queens for the spring term. This covers much of our history work for the year, as well as a significant art unit where we look at and create our own portrait pieces. A lot of the work links to our amazing local area – as the land for school is closely linked to Queen Elizabeth the 1st and Robert Dudley. We make a visit to Tamworth Castle to support our learning.

Summer Term: Our summer term topic is The Great Fire of London. The children love this historical topic, learning some amazing and sometimes weird and wonderful facts. This learning is supported by a visit from the Fire Brigade (emergencies allowing), and also a visit to the Jacobean Manor Aston Hall.
