Year 3

Year Three

Welcome to Year 3, the Kingfisher class, where we want to help your children learn, enjoy and develop the skills necessary to progress through key stage 2 and beyond. We have high expectations of our pupils and strive to help them achieve good or better progress throughout the year.

This is an extremely important year in the progress of our children, as they transition from the Infants to the Juniors. The children continue to develop their knowledge and skills in reading, writing and mathematics, but also study fascinating new topics, such as volcanoes, Ancient Egypt and French.

As the children begin Key stage 2, we encourage them to understand the increasing responsibility and independence they must show for them to continue to progress.  Our expectations are that the children take pride in their work and are proud of their accomplishments in all areas of school life. We love to share these successes with you throughout the year.

Year Three Curriculum

Autumn Term: In the Autumn term we learn about the lives of people in the Stone age and Iron age. This gives the children a fantastic opportunity to learn what was different, but also how similar they were to us. Half of the class will continue their swimming lessons from Year 2, whilst the rest learn the exciting sport of basketball. We will also create new versions of traditional tales and learn various methods of addition and subtraction.

Spring Term: The children learn about fascinating volcanoes and coasts in the Spring term. The remaining half of the class goes swimming in the spring term whilst the others learn to play basketball. We learn about using concrete and pictorial methods to solve multiplication and division. The children also study how to recognise and write different forms of poetry, such as acrostic, shape and riddles – which they love to perform!

Summer Term: In the summer term, we travel back thousands of years to visit the Ancient Egyptians. We also embrace the warmer weather and hit some balls around the field when we learn to play rounders and cricket. In science, we will study the life-cycles of different plants, which is supported by a visit to Birmingham botanic gardens.
